Tzfat's Old Cemetery

From all corners of the world, people come to the Tzfat cemetery to sit, pray, beseech or simply be in the company of the great Rabbi's who are buried there.

Most famous of it's residents is Rabbi Isaac Luria, also known as the Ari.  One of the most famous Kabbalists of all times, legend has it that he learned new Kabbalistic insights while studying with Elijah the Prophet in a cave of the synagogue, located just above the cemetery. Some of the other famous people interred here are Rabbi Moshe Alsheich, who wrote a commentary on the Torah, Rabbi Shlomo Alkabetz, who composed the Lecha Dodi prayer and Rabbi Yosef Caro, author of the Code of Jewish Law - The Shulchan Aruch.

While best known for the scholars from the Middle Ages who are buried here, there are also many Jews from thousands of years earlier too, like Rabbi Pinchas Ben Yair, the father in law of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai who composed the Zohar in the 1st century, Hoshea the Prophet, and some say Chana and her seven sons of Chanuka fame.
